It only takes about 30 seconds to go online and find insane videos taken using gopro products. The gopro has given us the ability to videotape action shots that we once could only watch in high budget movies. It has put awesome movie making capabilities in the hands of the everyday person. I have used the gopro hero myself on a number of occasions. I like to think I have grown up a bit since then, but a few years ago I got some of the greatest footage of myself that, at the time didn’t seem to great. But now, if my friends and I go back and watch the video take years ago, we laugh one of those “can’t breath” laughs every time.

I used to ride dirt bikes quite a bit. And I thought of myself as an indestructible Evel Knievel. So one summer afternoon I built a jump out in the orchards for my dirt bike. This jump would take me from one orchard (of a certain elevation) to another orchard (a higher elevation) across from it. And I wanted it on video (because I knew the world would want to see it). So I strapped a gopro hero to my helmet and got on my dirt bike. My friends all stood at the landing to watch. I got a pretty good running start to get enough speed, and hit that jump with all the confidence in the world. That was my problem. I was going way to fast and gave it way to much throttle. I definitely made it out of the first orchard. And as I came into the adjacent orchard I was so high that I went straight into a walnut tree. Not the bottom of the trunk, but up in the branches. The site to see wasn’t me hitting a bunch of branches, but my entire body caught in the branches and stuck way up in the tree as the dirt bike came tumbling down through everything and hitting the ground about 15-20 feet below me. That is the day I realized I had the worst friends in the world because instead of complete concern for their friend, they all fell on the ground laughing. None of them would climb up to come help me until each and every one of them got their iPhones out to get the best pictures they could. Lovely friends huh?

But today, if I go back and watch that video from my gopro hero and put it into slow-mo when I am entering those trees, it makes for a funny memory and some great footage.

The gopro hero is now being used in some other ways than originally thought use for, and have become a very large help.

Police officers are starting to use them when storming a house and making arrests. The footage is then used for a multiple of things. They analyze it to see where they can improve on something for the next time. They watch it to make see how they can maybe do something safer the next time. It is used largely as proof in court as to how the officer behaved and how suspects behaved.

Teachers are using them for projects outside of the classroom to give kids a new tool for learning. There is a 3rd grade teacher here locally that decided to let her students do a very fun project for science class. They were learning about how plants grow. So this teacher took a gopro and set it up on a tripod pointed at the ground where they planted a seed. And every day for 2 months (including weekends), she would go to the school first thing in the morning and download all of the previous days footage to her laptop. And after 2 months, she sped the video up and let the kids watch their plant grow from seed to mature plant in about 10 minutes. I applaud you 3rd grade teacher.

Extreme sports have made the gopro a normal part of their activities. If you have watched even 3 minutes of an extreme sport on TV then guaranteed you have watched gopro footage. Most certainly motocross, skateboarding, or skydiving. Every race or event has people chosen to where a gopro camera mounted to their helmet for on the course shots. They are some incredible views. You can actually see what the racer see in real time. The view from the sky as a skydiver if racing back towards earth. I never get board of that.  And now, if you want to go skydiving yourself (at an authorized skydiving location) you can pay a little extra and have a camera man jump along with you and video tape your experience up close and personal the whole way down for a truly one of a kind memory.

The Discount:

Gopro’s are everywhere these days. And that’s partly because the prices have come way down and are more affordable than they used to be. When they first came out, as with any new technology, they were very expensive and cost around $700 dollars. But now they have come down to very reasonable prices. The gopro hero is now drastically discounted at almost 1/7 the cost. You can have your brand new gopro for $129 dollars.  Now is the right time to get one for yourself.

If you haven’t already, I strongly recommend picking one up and seeing what kind of memories you can capture for your future. And maybe a few years from now you can be laughing at your stupid self in a “hey watch this” moment.
